Summer Fitness Tips

Dear Robin,

It's Summer already. Those of us with kids are inundated with kids camp activities, sports programs and family vacations. The hot weather will force us to the beach and inevitably into the water. Recreational activity is one of the best ways to get active and being with family and friends adds to the fun.

New Stuff is invigorating.....

Try a new sport. If you usually bike, try hiking. The Santa Monica mountains are a perfect place to hike. Wear comfortable shoes with a good tread, bring lots of water and snacks. The steeper mountains will offer an anarobic (strength training) and aerobic benefit.

Survive Summer

It's gonna be hot....

Smog and heat don't mix. If you are planning recreational activity outdoors pay attention to the air quality levels.

Exercise endurance is directly linked to energy (calories) and hydration. Hydrate with at least 16 oz of water before you get active.

Bring snacks with you so you can energise your exercise. Dried fruit, nuts and crackers will go a long way, and water with a little juice will offer a boost too. Apply sunscreen even if you are wearing long sleeves. UVA UVB levels are increaseng due to global warming. Slather your kids and yourself with at least SPF 45.

Fitness and your Health

I have been motivating people for years on the value of fitness as it relates to your health. With obesity on the rise it is a shame that the number of regular exercisers is staggeringly, low still below 20%. The biggest challenge I see is that most people say they don't have time, but it's less about time and more about energy. The quality and type of food you regularly eat is by far the most important factor to your fitness. A nutrient empty diet can still be full of calories like sodas, but foods like this will not provide you with the energy needed for exercise. Prepare for a succesful exercise program by eating right.
- Living foods together with lean protiens like fish and chicken.
- Avoid prepackaged foods and sauces
- Limit dining out to once a week,
- Keep sodium at 1500 mlgrams per day
- Make sure you consume at least .5 grams of protein for every pound of your present or ideal weight.
- Get hydrated, most people konk out during exercise from dehydration, not energy!
More about Weight Loss
Golden Rules
- Never starve yourself you won't lose body fat, only water and muscle.
- Go live, eat living foods.
- Exercise 5 times per week, include strength and cardio.
- Eat less each time you eat, your fist is a sample serving size for you.
- Picture yourself losing weight, the number on the scale, what you look like, and think only success.
- Bring healthy snacks wherever you go.
- Find a protein shake you like and supplement lunch or breakfast a few times a week.
- Don't eat after dinner.
- Don't eat in front of the TV.
- Limit soda and alcohol.
