How to Stick with Excercise

Dear Robin,

Exercise motivation is at an all-time low across America. Why do so many find it so difficult to stick with exercise long term? At LAPT we have surpassed the national average for exercise motivation and adherence and we know why.

There are three factors which must come together to stick with exercise.

1. Energy
You need to have nutrients in your body. This means you need to be well hydrated and have enough nutrients in your bloodstream both before and after exercise.

2. Education
You need to learn what exercise is to you and how to be a success at it. There is nothing worse than physical ouput without cause and effect. We all want to be sure that our efforts will not be in vain.

3. Stimulation
Just like any other human pleasure, your exercise program needs to be enjoyable and offer you stimulus that you look forward to. Endorphins take a little while to get working, so look for other positive stimulus like your trainer, other people in the club, the music or TV, or just the postive thoughts that are often released during exercise.

What Motivates You?

Exercise is not just a weight management tool. Its a physiological requirement that we all need. Children, adolescents, adults and the elderly all need to understand the benefits of exercise and the consequences to health by being sedentary. These are just a few of the side effects of our exercise program. If, at some point during your program, you are not feeling motivated, keep this list close by and pick which one(s) motivates you.
