When Cravings Become Addictions

A Message from LA Private Trainers Certified Lifestyle and Weight Management Consultant

Everyone gets food cravings. Its natural. But sometimes they turn into addiction and should be curbed. Here are some tips on managing them better.

Cravings should be managed when they are harmful to your health

Cravings are both physical and psychological. Even if you are aware that something is bad for you, you still may crave it as a reward or as a physical addiction. Food cravings are very common, although many people don't want to admit it. An example are foods high in sodium. If you are dehydrated you will likely crave foods high in sodium. If you crave sugars, often your diet is lacking in fiber.

One tool we use as Weight Management Counselors is to encourage regular exercise together with stimulus control methods. You identify when a craving hits and change the behavior or thoughts during the craving. An example may be that you want to snack on salty foods while you watch the news, or you may eat a favorite ice cream during a favorite show. You break the cycle of your cravings by changing your routine. Over time the triggers lose their power and the cravings get extinguished. This may seem unrewarding at first, but you gain control over your habits and cravings, which is much more rewarding in the long run.

Let me know how you are doing with healthy behaviors. What has worked for you? Share your tips and I can post them for our Clients!
